iPhone stud finder

If you have searched the App Store for a stud finder and come away unimpressed, you are not missing something - the honest situation is that there is no reliable free stud finder app for iPhone, and the reason is technical, not a gap in the market.

Why iPhone stud finder apps do not really work

A phone detects studs by reading its magnetometer (the compass sensor) to find the metal screws and nails inside a wall. Android lets apps read that sensor. iOS does not expose the magnetometer to apps in a way that supports reliable stud detection, and Safari blocks it on the web entirely. So an iPhone "stud finder" app has nothing dependable to measure. Many of the ones you see in the App Store either fake a result or rely on tilt and guesswork, which is worse than useless when you are about to drill.

What to do instead on iPhone and iPad

Because there is no free software option on iOS, a physical stud finder is genuinely the right tool here, not a fallback. And it is more accurate than any phone would be anyway: a dedicated electronic finder has a density (capacitive) sensor that reads the wood stud straight through the drywall - the exact sensor phones lack. A magnet-based finder, meanwhile, snaps onto the screws and nails with no batteries at all.

Best for most iPhone users: the Franklin ProSensor 710 - no calibration, reads the full stud width at once, the pick most reviewers recommend.

Cheapest, no batteries: the CH Hanson magnetic stud finder - a pocket magnet that finds the fasteners holding your drywall.

If you also have an Android device

If there is an Android phone in the house, you can use our free, open-source, ad-free app on that instead: install it from F-Droid. It will not run on iPhone, but it is a genuinely free option if you have Android handy for quick checks.
